Before we arrive at Ephesians 4:32, Paul first shows us what the Christian life should not look like. In
Ephesians 4:30–31, he gives a serious warning: “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were
sealed for the day of redemption.” Then he lists the attitudes and behaviours that damage relationships and
grieve the Spirit: bitterness, rage, anger, brawling, slander, and every form of malice.

But Paul does not leave us there. The next verse introduces a dramatic contrast. Instead of bitterness, he calls believers to kindness. Instead of rage, he calls for tenderheartedness. Instead of malice and retaliation, he calls for forgiveness.
In other words, Ephesians 4:32 is not an isolated moral command. It is the antidote to everything Paul has
just described. Where the old way of life produces resentment and conflict, the new life in Christ produces
kindness, compassion, and forgiveness.

Each person must ask themselves a simple but challenging question: what am I becoming? What am I becoming in moments of conflict? What am I becoming when I feel pressure or criticism? What am I becoming when someone treats me unfairly?
